Before a recent Western Caribbean cruise from Galveston, we started vacation a day early at The Tremont House, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott. Traveling with another couple, we wanted a relaxed, upscale place that felt like part of the getaway itself, not just a place to sleep before embarkation. Tremont turned out to be the perfect choice for luxury, location, and atmosphere.
Quick Snapshot
- Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (luxury option with historic charm)
- Type: Hotel
- Location: Downtown Galveston, about a mile from the furthest cruise terminal
- Best For: Couples, families, luxury/pre-cruise stays
- Vibe: Relaxed, historic, upscale
The Experience
We chose Tremont House because it had a two-bedroom apartment suite available, ideal for two couples who wanted both privacy and a shared living space to unwind. I booked it direct through the Marriott Bonvoy app for the best rate available, plus points and Elite night credits (something I can also do for clients).
From the moment we pulled up, valet and bell staff were welcoming and efficient, handling luggage for all four of us across the street and up the elevator. The front desk team inside the main hotel was just as polished, making check-in quick and friendly.
The hotel itself radiates elegance. Polished wood, historic architecture, and refined decor made it feel like we’d stepped into vacation mode immediately. After a quick refresh in our apartment suite, we headed out to wander The Strand for some window shopping on the way to dinner. Afterward, we returned to the hotel on foot, then warmed up with a nightcap at the Toujouse Bar in the lobby. We had been looking forward to visiting The Rooftop Bar, voted the Best Rooftop Bar in Galveston, but it was undergoing renovations when we were there. We’ll just have to check it out next time we have the chance to stay.
January added some festive magic: Christmas decor still sparkled inside, Mardi Gras arches framed the street outside (okay, maybe that was Christmas cheer also), and by morning, we even woke to a rare dusting of snow.
Breakfast the next morning in Blum & Co, the urban bistro in the lobby, was lively, filled with fellow cruisers buzzing about their sailings on three different ships heading out that same day. We enjoyed swapping stories before gathering our bags. The bell staff retrieved our vehicle and helped load our luggage again, and within minutes we were at the cruise terminal.

Accessibility Notes
On-site: elevators available (both in the main hotel and in the apartments across the street), staff ready to assist with luggage/parking. Those with mobility issues should be aware there are steps leading from the main entrance on Mechanic Street up to the lobby. Although I didn’t notice at the time, some notes suggest there is a wheelchair lift to the left of the lobby entrance. A valet can direct you.
Official hotel statement: Tremont strives to provide an accessible experience for guests with sight, hearing, and mobility needs.
Final Thoughts
