San Juan, Puerto Rico Cruise Port Guide: Everything You Need to Know
San Juan is one of the most unique cruise ports in the Caribbean. It’s both a homeport for Southern Caribbean sailings like this one on Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas, and a destination stop on itineraries out of Florida. Whether you’re arriving for a one-day visit or flying in to begin your vacation, San Juan rewards you with history, color, flavor, and easy access to deeper Caribbean adventures.
San Juan by the Numbers

What is the best month to cruise to Puerto Rico?
- Best months: December–April (clear skies, festivals, cooler air)
- Rainy season: May–November, with September–October rainiest
- Cheapest months: May–June and November shoulder seasons

Puerto Rico is a year-round destination, and ships adjust routes safely during stormy weather.
What cruise line departs from San Juan?
San Juan is a major departure point for Southern Caribbean cruises, often reaching islands you can’t hit easily from Florida.
Lines include:
- Royal Caribbean (Jewel of the Seas, others seasonally)
- Carnival Cruise Line
- Celebrity Cruises
- Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)
- Princess Cruises
Is San Juan walkable from the cruise port?
- Old San Juan Pier: Absolutely walkable. Cobblestones lead you to umbrella street (10 min), San Juan Cathedral (5 min), and both El Morro and San Cristóbal forts (15–20 min). Cafés, plazas, and shops are right outside the pier.
- Pan American Pier: This is the homeport terminal; 10 minutes by taxi/Uber from Old San Juan.
Even if you don’t book an excursion, simply walking Old San Juan is one of the best “free” days in the Caribbean.
Why are cruise ships not going to San Juan, Puerto Rico?
This comes from history: after Hurricane Maria (2017), San Juan’s cruise traffic paused during recovery. Today, the port is fully open, busy, and welcoming over a million visitors each year.
Tourism matters here. Cruisers directly support Puerto Rico’s economy and recovery, making every visit meaningful.
